No matter the month, you can find a ‘National’ Drink Day to suit your fancy. Feel like throwing an impromptu party? Search the official (or unofficial) drink days for your chosen month and you will be inundated with a varied, and sometimes strange, selection of celebratory days to build your theme around. Although I know that this is officially a top ten list, I have added 12 (one for every month) of our favourite drinking days for a years worth of themed parties. Add these into your regular rotation of Oscar Parties, Murder Mysteries and Sleepovers and you’ve got weekends full of fun!
January – Although there are several different drink days for January, I am going to have to go with Burns Night on January 25th. Namely because I love good whiskey, good poetry, good food and good cheer! I also have fantastic memories of my babies dancing the night away at a Robert Burns celebration many years ago. Invite some of your scotch drinking afficionados over for a tasting, a poetry reading and a traditional Scottish supper. This will be a great time to make use of the dram (about a teaspoon) rather than a full ounce depending on how many guests and bottles you have.
February – Going to have to go with National Body Shot Day on February 25th. Try your hardest to not be boring with this one. A shot out of the boobs or belly button is so yesterday. Typically, body shots are meant to have a sexual undertone (or not so under and just plain tone) to them, but I am still infatuated with the reddit story of the grandma who takes shots out of a baby’s fontanelle. I’m going to go out on a limb and say you can have a pretty interesting party with fully clothed and consenting adults.
March – This one was a toss up. Love the idea of International Whiskey Day on the 27th, but since we already drank copious amounts in January, I’m going to have to spread the love and go with National Absinthe Day on March 5th. Ernest Hemmingway, Marcel Proust, Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh and Edgar Allan Poe were all known absinthe drinkers. You can either go classy with this party theme or go Eurotrip. Either way, it’s bound to be a fun event!
April – This is a month that I like to make all about me since it’s my birthday month. Hence, I have chosen New Beer’s Eve on April 6th. Mainly because it’s funnier than National Beer Day on the 7th.
May – May will always be all about Cinco de Mayo on May 5th. For my opa’s second go around at true love, he was lucky enough to find a fantastic Mexican lady who cares a great deal for him. They live half the year in Oaxaca and we have been lucky enough to be exposed to the Mexican culture from an early age. Although Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of the Mexican’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862, we tend to use the day as a celebration of Mexican culture.
June – National Gin Day on June 11th is an absolute given. I adore gin. Whether it’s my horticulture background or my Dutch roots, gin speaks to me. Host a Prohibition party with bathtub gin. Whether you’re serving a classic gin with mainly juniper notes or more of a floral, you’re sure to find a flavour you enjoy.
July – National Daiquiri Day, July 19th (11th, Mojito Day). This one is such as toss up as everyone loves daiquiris and mojitos. We went with the daquiri for July’s drink day since summer means watermelon and the watermelon daquiri is so easy and not overly sweet, which in my books is winner winner chicken dinner. A classic mint mojito doesn’t need it’s own day. I love it so much it can have the whole month of July.
August – National Rum Day, August 16th. Some of my favourite drinks are made with rum. Dark and Stormy, mojito and the classic Cuba Libre are all drinks that make my heart skip a beat. Jerry may have had Dorothy at Hello, but Keith had me at Flor de Cana.
September – National Rum Punch Day, September 20th. Fresh juice, rum, simple syrup in a tall glass full of ice. Relax in a lounge chair and pretend you’re on a tropical island.
October – National Vodka Day, October 4th. Any day when I have an excuse to drink a Moscow Mule is a good day. Just make sure you’re not making an inferior drink and use Jamaican Ginger Beer.
November – National Pickle Appreciation Day, November 14th. Whether you’re chasing your whiskey with a shot of pickle juice or using the brine in your caesar, pickle juice is the perfect addition to your mixed drinks.
December – National Sangria Day, December 20th. Everyone has their favourite Sangria, but the one I enjoy the most is Ruby Red Sangria.
- 1 bottle of cheap red wine
- 1 cup of Ruby Grapefruit
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup lime juice
- lime slices for garnish
